Circlip

The circlip is a precision retaining ring used to secure rotating or sliding components on shafts or inside housings within the steering and drivetrain systems. It prevents axial movement of bearings, gears, rods, and shafts while allowing smooth rotational or sliding operation. Despite its small size, the circlip plays a crucial structural role by maintaining correct component positioning under high dynamic loads and vibration.

When a circlip weakens due to metal fatigue, corrosion, incorrect installation, or deformation, it can lose its retaining force. This may cause internal components to shift out of position, leading to misalignment, mechanical binding, noise, accelerated wear, or complete internal failure of the steering or drivetrain assembly. A failed circlip often results in cascading mechanical damage.
