Heater exchanger / matrix

The heater exchanger, also known as the heater matrix, transfers thermal energy from engine coolant into the cabin air stream, allowing the vehicle’s interior to be heated efficiently. It functions as a compact radiator inside the HVAC system, where hot coolant passes through fine channels while air is blown across its surface. Efficient heat exchange is essential for rapid cabin warm-up, windshield defrosting, and stable interior temperature.

When the heater matrix becomes blocked internally, corrodes, or develops leaks, heating performance drops significantly. Symptoms include weak or no cabin heat, sweet coolant odors inside the vehicle, fogging of windows, and gradual coolant loss. A leaking matrix can also introduce coolant into the HVAC housing, damaging interior components and electronics.
